A child on a road trip with his family asks, "Where are we?" and the
father answers, "I don't rightly know. We're off the blue roads [the
Interstate Highways marked in blue on the road atlas]. We're off the
red roads [the US and state highways]. We're off the black roads [the
county highways]. I think we're off the map altogether." It was always
my dream to be off the map altogether.
After the jump, a few of the random places (and I mean random
literally) that I visited vicariously last month that are "off the
blue roads".

Twitter
tracks from August, 2010:
- 2010 08 01 - Texans discussing weather: Him: "It sure is hot today." Her: "It's only 99."
- 2010 08 02 - Headline: "Lindsay Lohan released from jail, goes to rehab." What, is that the name of some new trendy LA nightclub?
- 2010 08 03 - News coincidence: Brett Favre says he's quitting football for the 3rd time. Same day, Bristol Palin says she's quitting Levi for 2nd time.
- 2010 08 03 - You Can't Take It With You: Quirky 1938 Oscar-winning Frank Capra comedy. Tired of "It's a Wonderful Life?" Try this for the swellest time.
- 2010 08 04 - Headline: "Google Bails on Wave" http://goo.gl/q3o3. Sometimes, my procrastination in picking up a new tool saves me time in the end.
- 2010 08 04 - Cheering for today's Prop 8 ruling will be short. This SCOTUS won't uphold any ruling based on due process and equal protection clauses.
- 2010 08 05 - Mark's Stylebook: When a column isn't worth the paper to print it, feature it online as a "Web Exclusive"
- 2010 08 06 - Earmarks are "a symbol of a broken Washington." -- Pete Sessions. His own contribution to breaking DC? $50,965,500. http://goo.gl/KrEZ
- 2010 08 06 - I correctly answered 11 out of the 11 possible questions, on the Pew News IQ Quiz! http://pewrsr.ch/9U8jNF

Before the game, Ellen suggested moving higher up in the grandstand if he wanted to take photos, but Mark was sure that this was high enough.

Twitter
tracks from July, 2010:
- 2010 07 08 - I can't be the only one who watched more of the LeBron James special than watched of any NBA regular season game this season.
- 2010 07 09 - When you woke up this morning, did the world seem completely different? Yes? That's how important yesterday's LeBron James announcement was.
- 2010 07 09 - Crazy Heart: washed-up country singer whose career is on the skids, then things go downhill. I'd buy that album. The Wrestler with guitars.
- 2010 07 11 - When Ellen walked in late and asked what she missed, I said, "nothing." The World Cup announcer was more blunt - it was a "pig of a game."
- 2010 07 11 - The Richardson Symphony Orchestra is "in a toxic mess." You can't support music without supporting the musicians. http://goo.gl/JcCf
- 2010 07 11 - What's the difference between an RSO musician and a pizza? A pizza can feed a family of four (H/T to Wanderer) http://goo.gl/JcCf
- 2010 07 12 - Run, Newt, Run! Seeing Newt and Sarah on stage during a GOP primary debate would make for great political theater. I'm popping corn already.
- 2010 07 12 - Richardson only the 30th best suburb in Dallas?!? Hey, there's always Garland (45th). http://goo.gl/rArX
- 2010 07 13 - Selling Bonds Without Voter Approval: When state law trumps city charter. http://goo.gl/qlrM
- 2010 07 14 - Patrick "Car-Free" Kennedy Talks to Texas Observer About His Idealized Dallas (http://goo.gl/9Idr) - Spoiler alert: it's car-free.

Twitter
tracks from June, 2010:
- 2010 06 01 - There's a new non-profit dedicated to preserving artifacts and photographs from Richardson history: http://preservationrichardson.org/
- 2010 06 02 - Travel old Route 66 today and see all the towns that died when the Interstate bypassed them. Then you'll know why cities don't cut the cord.
- 2010 06 02 - Remember Breckenridge? When the railroad (the freeway of its day) bypassed the town, it died. Richardson replaced it. http://goo.gl/dFuf
- 2010 06 02 - Headline: "THEFT At The 'Tonight Show.'" Surprised? Don't be, the stolen items were from wardrobe, not Jay's jokes. No one wanted those.
- 2010 06 03 - Baseball doesn't need another asterisk. The call was the call. Sure, it sucked. Deal with it. Move on.
- 2010 06 03 - Pitcher Armando Galarraga to umpire Jim Joyce after the ump's bad call at first base: "Nobody's perfect."
- 2010 06 03 - Headline: "Kagan pays 'courtesy call' on Cornyn." Yep, that's all it was 'cause she knows she can't expect any courtesy in reciprocation.
- 2010 06 04 - Headline: "New Study Shows Arctic Ice at Lowest Point in Thousands of Years." Don't worry, don't listen, they're scientists.
- 2010 06 04 - The Big Short: Story of investors who foresaw the housing collapse and knew how to profit. Great explanation for economic meltdown. Read it.
- 2010 06 05 - Excellent case for organ donation by someone whose family faced the agonizing situation. A must read from Richardson. http://goo.gl/bGcr
- 2010 06 05 - An Education: a girl, smart and clever beyond her years, in a hurry to grow up, gains wisdom as she gets ... an education. See it.
- 2010 06 05 - Women's lacrosse Final Four ref's conflict of interest taints Maryland's championship. NCAA screwed up... again. http://goo.gl/SdtQ
- 2010 06 05 - Arizona school mural whitewashed. When you say, "I am not a racist individual, but..." you confirm that yes, you are. http://goo.gl/KFM7

The whole world is watching. Even Americans.
From June 11 through July 11, the world will pause to watch the
World Cup. Find a location in the Dallas area to join in. Ideally, a
location where Brazilians gather to watch Brazil play, or where
Slovenians, Slovakians or Serbians gather -- the more exotic the
country, the better, if they have a critical mass of fans in the north
Texas area. The enthusiasm is infectious. Catch it. Even if you never
watched a soccer match before in your life.

Twitter tracks from May, 2010:
- 2010 05 01 - Congrats to Berkner and Richardson HS baseball teams, co-champs of District 9-5A. One game playoff today to determine top seed in playoffs.
- 2010 05 01 - Play In May! That's the goal of every high school baseball team in Texas. Two RISD co-champions went at it today. http://goo.gl/miKc
- 2010 05 01 - Thanks to the entire DMN team for coverage of today's rally for immigration rights. Add "si se puede" to the great American rallying cries.
- 2010 05 01 - I'm just going to enjoy the spectacle of the Kentucky Derby and all its excesses and not once think of Sen. Mitch McConnell. ... Drats.
- 2010 05 01 - The best thing about the Kentucky Derby and all other big betting events??? Despite the fact that my pick loses, I never lose any money. :-)
- 2010 05 01 - I was for Richardson's bond election before, but now I've learned that my alley will likely get replaced if the bond passes. Woot!
- 2010 05 01 - The Blind Side: good feel-good movie, more a family movie than a football movie. Sandra Bullock was good, not great. Compare with Precious.
- 2010 05 02 - Richardson Echo letter to the editor: "Don't let Richardson become Bedford, Texas all over again." Ouch! http://goo.gl/etdD
- 2010 05 02 - Catch Conan on "60 Minutes?" You know how long that show has been on the air? It uses a mechanical stopwatch and a magazine as brand symbols
- 2010 05 02 - RT @WalkableDFW: "Funny that my iPhone always uses it's and its incorrectly and imposes its will upon me." Yeah, that's my story, too.
- 2010 05 02 - Headline: "Pope all but endorses authenticity of Turin Shroud." I detect a man desperate to change subject, even at cost of sounding silly.
